Welcome to the

Co-Curation and the Public History of Science & Technology Workshop Wiki

October 22-24, 2010

Since this workshop is about co-curation we have set up a wiki for people to be able to add, edit and amend your comments and thoughts on all of the sessions of the workshop. Not used or editted a wiki before? Check out the following link http://www.slideshare.net/leviragedelavis/how-to-use-pbwiki-presentation

Background Information

The Science Museum, London, is developing some major new galleries focusing on the history of science and the history of communications. A core part of the project will be working with audiences in the selection and development of the stories, objects, exhibits and overall approach. With this project the Science Museum aims to become a unique meeting place for communities, organisations and disciplines engaged in co-curation, recreational history and history of science, technology and medicine.

In a 3-day workshop, the Science Museum and guests will examine the state of current practice in the museum and gallery world. The following issues will be up for discussion:

  • What is Co-curation? How has it been used in the UK and internationally to engage audiences?
  • What are the benefits and drawbacks to museums and galleries giving power to external groups to develop content?
  • How do the public engage with history and objects? And how can audience understandings be shared between different kinds of visitors?
  • How can museums take a more active role in transferring knowledge from the academic historians?
  • What lessons can be learned about managing audience participation from the worlds of the web and digital media?

We used twitter during the sessions to encourage debate and discussion: the hashtag was #ccph

I am Joe aged 10 and I thought it was really fun talking to everyone about our exhibition called Shhh its a secret. I was a bit nervous at first but I found out that there was nothing to worry abuot. I thought that we did really well and I want to find out more from that lady talking about the headless zebra.

My name is Cecilia and I am aged 10 years old. I 'm one of the twelve young curators that took part in curating the exhibition Shhh...its a secret and talking to the adults at this conference today was a new experience for me but I think we did a good job of explaining how we curated our exhibition.

Thnx Joe and Cecilia for your input. I found your comments and input fantastic and inspiring. Keep up the good work! I really liked your points about developing exhibtions for children need to be done by chidren. At the Australian Museum in Sydney we do annual Kids Colleges with students and regularly consult them on what we're doing. More here: http://bit.ly/d8Sbqs
